Tá raic ann ar líne mar gheall ar an “drochmheas” ar an Ghaeilge a deirtear a léiríodh ag searmanas bronnta na Sockies, gradaim do na meáin shóisialta a bhí ar siúl san RDS i mBaile Átha Cliath an tseachtain seo.
Agus na hainmniúcháin agus an buaiteoir i rannóg na Gaeilge sa chomórtas á bhfógairt aige d’iarr an craoltóir aitheanta agus MC na hoíche, Rick O’Shea, ar dhuine ón lucht féachana teacht ar an ardán agus na hainmniúcháin Ghaeilge a léamh amach mar nach raibh sé in ann iad a rá.
Bródúil as @SnaGaeilge as duais a bhaint ag na #Sockies18 – but would any other awards mock a minority group/category like this? #nílsécgl pic.twitter.com/DTbUGVO7CI

Chuir roinnt daoine in iúl ar na meáin shóisialta ó shin gur ghoill sé orthu go gcaithfí mar sin leis an Ghaeilge agus bhí míshástacht ann freisin nár taispeánadh físeán faoi na hiomaitheoirí Gaeilge, mar a rinneadh i gcás na rannóga eile go léir.
It was my first time at the @socmediaawards tonight. Every recipient was worthy of their award and the tone of the event should acknowledge the important role social media plays in our society. At times this evening, it failed to do so in my view and that’s a pity. #Sockies18

So many deserving winners at #sockies2018 tonight, a massive well done. Really disappointed to see online how poorly they treated award recipients @CnaG though – I don’t imagine any other linguistic/minority group would be treated with such notable public contempt ????

Calling people names is not the way to go when discussing an issue of respect. @socmediaawards correctly identified the commercial potential to them of including Irish-language category. If everyone else got a nominations video, why not this category?
— Tadhg Mac Dhonnagáin (@macdhtadhg) 15 Meitheamh 2018
And you’d think part of hosting an awards event would be learning how to pronounce the names of the nominees.@rickoshea asked for someone from the audience to come up and read out the nominees. Every other category got a video and voiceover.

Mar fhreagra ar na gearáin, dúirt Rick O’Shea go raibh Darach Ó Seaghdha, údar Motherfoclóir, in ainm is an duais a bhronnadh ach nach raibh sé in ann a bheith i láthair. Dúirt Rick O’Shea go raibh sé socraithe go dtiocfadh duine ó Lorg Media chun na hainmniúcháin a fhógairt.
In telling me that was part of my job. It’s not. Also, there was a video. It had been arranged for a prominent Irish speaker to do the names live this year, they had to cancel. I found someone on the fly (@LorGMedia) who did it beautifully, much better than I could have.

Dúirt Orlaith Nic Gearailt ó Chonradh na Gaeilge go raibh na deacrachtaí céanna i dtaobh na n-ainmniúchán Gaeilge ag searmanas bronnta na Sockies anuraidh agus gur thairg Conradh na Gaeilge cúnamh leis an fhoghraíocht dóibh ionas nach dtarlódh an rud céanna i mbliana.
Séideadh faoin chonspóid, nuair a d’fhoilsigh Orlaith Nic Gearailt an freagra a fuair an Conradh ó Damien Mulley, fear eagair an chomórtais.
At #Sockies17 they had a bit of trouble pronouncing Irish language groups so we offered to help out for this year &this is the reply. At #Sockies18 @rickoshea asked for some1 from the audience to say the names instead of the prof voice over in every other section #NílSéCgl pic.twitter.com/W25qh6fXvx

I measc na ndaoine nach raibh sásta faoi dhearcadh lucht na Sockies bhí Orla O’Donnell, iriseoir agus comhghleacaí de chuid Rick O’Shea in RTÉ, a dúirt gur “inexcusable bullshit” a bhí i gceist leis an fhreagra a thug lucht eagraithe an chomórtais ar thairiscint Chonradh na Gaeilge.
That’s absolutely inexcusable bullshit. My English husband doesn’t speak Irish but had to announce some shortlisted entries as gaeilge in media awards a couple of yrs ago. Guess what? He asked for help and did it.

Imagine setting up social media communication awards and then choosing passive aggressiveness as your preferred method of communication- embarrassing #sockies18
— Áine (@Aine_NiG) 15 Meitheamh 2018
Chuir Rick O’Shea roinnt tvuíteanna eile amach ó shin ag moladh na Sockies agus Damien Mulley as rannóg Gaeilge a bheith ann.
I’ve seen the word “token” used. Unlike almost every other of these ceremonies @damienmulley has had categories as gaeilge in @socmediaawards @webawards and @IrishBlogAwards since I started doing them in 2006. I have butchered pronunciations (even with help!) many times.
— Rick O’Shea (@rickoshea) June 15, 2018
Dúirt O’Shea nár labhair sé Gaeilge ó bhí sé ina ghasúr agus nach dtuigeann sé roinnt dá raibh ráite faoi ar líne dá bharr.
There are many, many conversations being aimed at me and around me in tweets as gaeilge but I don’t speak fluent enough Irish to understand them or respond to them. I intend no disrespect in this statement – I just haven’t spoken the gaeilge since I was a kid.

Very unprofessional attitude by Rick O’Shea. Disappointing. Díomách

Tarlaíonn rudaí mar sin agus is maith an scéal an Ghaeilge do bheith ann mar rannóg. Amaideach do beith ag déanamh ionsaí ar dream a rinne iarracht go deonach aitheantas a thabhairt don Ghaeilge. Cén uair a raibh Cónra na Gaeilge ag clamhsán faoin Rotary Club, faoi Lions, faoin GAA, faoin IRFU, faoin FAI, faoi Joyce Museum, faoin Chestr Beatty museum, faoi na gnónna agus na monarchain sa “Gaeltacht Oifigiúil a bhíonn á reachtáil tré Bhéarla?
