Is ‘cúis cheiliúrtha’ agus ‘cúis bhróid’ é aistear foghlama teanga Joe McHugh agus ní cheart go ngoillfeadh sé ar éinne gur roghnaíodh Teachta Dála gan Gaeilge mar Aire Gaeltachta, a deir an Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
Tugann an Taoiseach an méid sin le fios agus é faoi agallamh ag an iriseoir Máire Treasa Ní Cheallaigh do Fine Gaeilgeoir, clár nua faoi aistear teanga McHugh a chraolfar amárach ar RTÉ Raidió a hAon.
“It’s not a case of people saying this is something inferior here, in fact they should be more than proud of the fact that somebody who lost his Irish has actually relearned it.
“That’s a source of celebration and a demonstration that anyone can do this. So, far from being put out by it, they should be welcoming the fact here’s someone who actually applied himself, went down to Oideas Gael and has come back able to converse in the native tongue,” a deir an Taoiseach.
Admhaíonn an Taoiseach ar an gclár gur cúrsaí tíreolaíochta ba mhó ba chúis leis an gcinneadh McHugh a cheapadh thar Theachtaí Dála eile a bhfuil an teanga ar a dtoil acu.
Anuas air sin, luann sé go bhfuil McHugh ar an bhfód le tamall maith de bhlianta agus go raibh baint aige sin lena chinneadh chomh maith.
“He’d been around for a while and obviously it’s a nice thing to be able to shuffle a team and obviously Donegal would have been left without anybody in Government if you didn’t replace Dinny McGinley with another representative.
“So not just for geographical reasons but for the fact that he’s been around a while.”
Géilleann an Taoiseach nach lia duine ná tuairim i gcás cheapachán McHugh ach seasann sé lena chinneadh.
“You can make judgements as to who you appoint, from there point of view you’re probably right, but from other points of view, you’re probably wrong, but you fill the positions.”
Dar le Kenny gur ceapachán tábhachtach a bhí ann sa tslí is gur chuir sé ar a súile do chách gur féidir le héinne, pé acu ón nGaeltacht iad nó nach ea, an Ghaeilge a shealbhú ach iarracht a dhéanamh.
“In this case I thought it was an important signal to everybody else that here’s somebody who has a responsibility now who had lost his Irish, to go and learn and to prove to everybody that this is possible. Get on with it and you’re going to carry it for the rest of your life. That’s the big prize.”
Deir an Taoiseach le Ní Cheallaigh gur ‘cúis cheiliúrtha’ agus ‘cúis bhróid’ é aistear foghlama teanga Joe McHugh.
“If you asked Joe McHugh a year ago a couple simple questions in Irish he couldn’t answer you. Now he can, and this is an Irish citizen…
“It’s not a case of people saying this is something inferior here, in fact they should be more than proud of the fact that somebody who lost his Irish has actually relearned it. That’s a source of celebration and a demonstration that anyone can do this. So far from being put out by it, they should be welcoming the fact here’s someone who actually applied himself, went down to Oideas Gael and has come back able to converse in the native tongue.”
Déanann McHugh cur síos sa chlár a chraolfar amárach ar a chuid iarrachtaí an teanga a fhoghlaim agus ar conas a bhraith sé nuair a cuireadh in iúl dó gurb é a bheadh ina Aire Gaeltachta.
“I knew there was going to be trouble ahead… I ceartainly wasn’t walking on clouds,” a deir Aire Stáit na Gaeltachta.
Deir McHugh go raibh sé chomh neirbhíseach sin faoina easpa líofachta i dtosach na haimsire gur tháinig a chuid dualgaisí idir é agus coladh na hoíche.
Tagraíonn an tAire Stáit chomh maith d’fhíseán grinn a rinne Tuairisc.ie faoina aistear teanga agus a dhúil sa bhfocal ‘smugairle róin’.
Bhain an físeán siar as, a deir sé, ach mheas sé gur deineadh go maith é. Craolfar Fine Gaeilgeoir ag a haon a chlog amárach, Dé Sathairn.
